What is Nasi Lemak? Nasi Lemak is a rice dish cooked in
coconut milk and pandan leaf and is originated from Malaysia, but since its
origin, it has also become a widely popular dish in Singapore. One can find a
stall selling Nasi Lemak in almost every food centre in Singapore, but finding
the best is like “finding a needle in the haystack”. Why am I grateful for this
dish to be present in Singapore? I am
definitely grateful for this local delicacy, as it not only brings out the
malay heritage, it also brings out the Chinese heritage as nowadays, Chinese
dishes such as ngohiong and vegetable curry is served with the malay
ingredients. This shows the fusion of food in Singapore which allows the
Singaporeans and even foreigners to taste and try food from other culture,
which not only can fill their hunger pangs but it can also allow them to have
further knowledge about another culture which supports Singapore vision as a
‘Multi-Racial Society’.
Whenever someone ask me where to find a good mouth-watering
plate of nasi lemak, I will not think twice nor hesitate to say it’s the nasi
lemak found in Holland Village! 363 Holland Village Nasi Lemak, is a small
little shop located at the corner of Holland village food centre which is very
hard to miss out due to the brightly coloured ingredients that are displayed
out which never fails to attract customers to stop in their tracks and take a
minute to take a glimpse of what is being served, theres always a constant
queue in front of the stall, which is run by a amiable aunty, who always have a
smile hanging on her face. The fragrance of the Nasi Lemak could be smelt a distance away,
definitely sweeping me off my feet! This Nasi Lemak stall is not like any other
ordinary stall that would serve the same egg, chicken wings, ikan bilis, here
there is a wide variety of lip-smacking, flavourful ingredients that one would
have a hard time choosing from, as all of them just look so delicious!
Today, I ordered a fried chicken thigh, luncheon meat and
some long beans. I was quite disappointed when I found out my favourite sayur
lodeh which is a nonya dish also known as vegetable curry was sold out! But
nonetheless, I did not regret the other ingredients that I chose. The fried
chicken thigh which is one of their popular ingredients was fried to
perfection, with a slightly brown crispy skin. When you cut open the chicken,
you can see the juice flowing out of the moist, tender chicken thigh which is
not overcooked until it is too dry, which melted in my mouth. Other than that
there was the sambal long beans, which kept my taste buds dancing, although it
was spicy and kept sweat trickling down my forehead, it was a ingredient that
is not to be missed out on! As for the rice in the Nasi Lemak, the rice is
cooked with Thai rice which is not too soggy neither is it sticky, it also does
not have a overpowering taste of the coconut milk, instead it is very light and
fragrant. What is a scrumptious plate of Nasi Lemak without having sweet, tangy
sambal chilli that would keep one singing for it after just one taste, paired
with it?
In conclusion there are several compelling reasons why one
should visit this Nasi Lemak stall! There is the tangy sambal chilli that will
keep one crying for more, the succulent chicken thigh that is fried to
perfection which is worth the money being under $10! It is also conveniently
located near the Holland Village Circle Line Station. So why not jump onto a
train, cab or car and come on down to this Nasi Lemak stall that I guarantee
will not be a waste of your trip!
